"God Speaks"

"And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth." 1 Samuel 3:10

Yesterday I told my little five year old granddaughter that the Lord had spoken something to me one day while I was praying. Her reply was, "You heard Him?" The other day a friend was telling me that her husband thinks it's "spooky" that she knows things that she has no "natural" way of knowing. She just tells him that she believes the Lord speaks them to her. I have heard many people question that God actually speaks to someone. The idea is so foreign to so many-- including professing Christians.

I don't understand why we would think that God wouldn't, or couldn't, speak to us. He is God, therefore, He can speak if He wants to. He has always spoken to His people. He would walk and talk with Adam in the cool of the day. He spoke to Noah to build an ark. He spoke to Abraham and told him He would make him a great nation. He spoke to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments. He spoke to the kings. He spoke to the prophets. He spoke to the disciples.

How does He speak to us? He can speak to us audibly if He desires to. (That is what my granddaughter thought I meant.) But He mostly speaks to us by His Holy Spirit. "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith". (Revelation 2:7) He speaks to us through a small still voice. "And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice." (1 Kings 19:12) He speaks to us through others. "Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me." (Matthew 28:10) He speaks to us through the Bible. "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." (Joshua 1:8)   He speaks to us through His Son Jesus. "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds." (Hebrews 1:1,2)

He hasn't changed. If He ever did speak to mankind, He still does. He can speak to us in any fashion that He desires. He even spoke through a donkey once. So the question isn't, "Does God speak to us or not?". The question should be, "Are we listening when He does?"

Have a great day. God always has and always will speak to His people. Is He speaking to you? Are you listening?
