"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." Proverbs 11:14
"In the multitude of counsellors there is safety." We all have times when we have to seek out the counsel of others. We need help, we need instruction at times because we don't always know what to do. Pharaoh sought counsel concerning the dreams he had. Moses needed the wise counsel of his father in law concerning judging the matters of the children of Israel. Ruth heeded the counsel of her mother in law concerning Boaz.
"Where no counsel is, the people fall." Without godly counsel we can rest assured that we will fall- that is what the verse tells us. We can easily make mistakes. We can go in the wrong direction. We can mess up our lives. Without wise godly counsel we will do "what is right in our own eyes". Doing what is right in our own eyes ends up leading us in the way of death.
Where do we get counsel? From our spiritual leaders, our teachers, our elders, those who are more educated than we are, those who have greater wisdom or from our public officials? The answer is yes, we can get counsel from all the above. But there is a primary source of counsel that we tend to forget about and instead seek out the counsel of other people. "And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6b) Our beloved Jesus whose birth we are getting ready to celebrate, our everlasting Father, His name is called Counselor. He is the Counselor of counselors. He is the greatest counselor because He knows everything about everything. He knows everything about the situation. He knows the end result before it even begins. He knows every detail, every hidden motive, every agenda, everything! And when He gives His counsel, it is not with an ulterior motive, it is not to trap you into something, it is not to take advantage of you, it won't lead you astray, He counsels you according to counsel of His own will-- with your best interest at heart. He counsels you according to the good plans that He has for your life.
While the Bible tells us to seek out godly, wise counsel so that we will have safety in the decisions that we make, we must never place the counsel of men before the counsel of God. Get counsel from others, but go to God and seek His counsel as well.
Have a great day. His name shall be called Counsellor.
